Addressing wait times means looking at the UK-wide picture, but solving the problem relies on focusing on smaller individual trusts and their needs. Guernsey, for example, has had a three-fold increase in their gastroenterology inpatient waiting list since Covid; 536 patients might not sound like a lot, but it’s putting a significant strain on other services. For example, the cancer screening programme here is currently on hold.

Departments like these are where we can make a huge difference, fast, delivering a positive impact for a community. Medinet’s weekend clinics on the island of Guernsey were recently highlighted by ITV news, where care is now being delivered to gastroenterology patients.

Dr Rabey, Guernsey’s Medical Director, had this to say:

“Medinet has excellent post-operative outcomes and patients being referred to these weekend clinics will receive the same high standard of care had they continued to wait until they could be seen by an on-island consultant.”

It’s a positive message, and we are proud to work with the NHS to improve care for patients and relieve stress on staff. The knock-on effect of addressing the gastroenterology wait by offering endoscopy clinics means that more people can be seen, diagnosed early, and treated effectively. It relieves pressure on staff and allows patients to be seen at an even more convenient time.

Gynaecology waiting lists reach record high

According to a recent report by the BBC, waiting lists for gynaecology services in England have reached record highs, leaving many women waiting far too long for essential services.

Figures from NHSE show that in January 2022, the gynaecology waiting list stood at a staggering 456,938. This compares to 286,008 in February 2020.

Waiting lists for almost all NHS services have suffered since the onset of the pandemic, however as these figures demonstrate, the waiting list for gynaecology services was already extremely high even before COVID-19. Today, an unacceptable number of women are waiting for treatment for what are often painful, debilitating conditions, many of which are worsening as a result of having to wait for care. Because many gynaecological conditions are progressive, longer waits can result in a need for more complex, invasive treatment and surgery, which may not otherwise have been required.

Today, over 25,000 women have already been on gynaecology waiting lists for over a year and over 1,300 have been waiting for over 2 years.

More worrying still, there are an estimated 400,000 ‘hidden referrals’, as a result of a reluctance to come forward for help since the onset of the pandemic. If these numbers were factored in, then waiting lists for gynaecology would rocket to over 850,000.

Adapt and support: Tackling the cataract backlog

In this latest article from the Hospital Times, Kate Pedwell, Matron of Ophthalmology at Medinet, talks about how Medinet is helping the NHS to tackle backlogs in cataract procedures and keep cataract services moving at optimum speed, while maintaining high quality patient care.

Together, Medinet and the NHS are working towards the implementation of radical new measures to reduce waiting times for patients, including a pilot program for a one-stop cataract surgery pathway.

Medinet’s ophthalmology insourcing team of consultant ophthalmologists and ophthalmic clinic nurses is already working closely with local clinicians and NHS managers to help trusts manage their patients safely and efficiently, tackle the cataract backlog and improve services for patients.

NHS launch new platform for elective care patients

The NHS has announced the launch of a new online platform – My Planned Care – which gives patients waiting for care the opportunity to check waiting lists and access the support they need, at the touch of a button.

The new platform aims to empower patients, by improving transparency and providing them with access to a range of personalised resources whilst they are on the waiting list. There are plans to expand the platform in the coming weeks and months, however patients accessing the service can already see information relating to waiting times at their local hospitals.

It is hoped that by providing patients with clear guidance about waiting times and relevant information which is specific to their condition, they will be in a better position to support their own healthcare journey.
